Jamaica

Jamaica has long been a favorite destination for US tourists interested in experiencing the Caribbean. Whether you are interested in experiencing a romantic escape or a party atmosphere, Jamaica can provide it.

The popular image of Jamaica is emerald rain forests, waterfalls that tumble into cool, clear streams, and glorious beaches that rival any in the Caribbean. The legendary “cool” of Jamaican culture is heard in its reggae music and by the dry wit of the young Jamaican men who pilot visitors down the Great River on bamboo rafts. You won’t easily forget the throngs of competing taxi drivers who swarm outside the Crafts Market in Montego Bay.

Destination Tips and Features

Jamaica is a wonderful place to visit. The tourist areas are extremely safe with very little crime. The people are educated, warm & friendly. They speak English, but have their own dialect called “Patois” which they are eager to share with you. Tourism is a huge part of the Jamaican economy so they are very eager to welcome you back time after time. You will likely meet some locals who you will remember for many years.

Popular Destinations

Jamaica is one of the most beautiful and culturally rich islands in the Caribbean with an economy that depends largely on tourism. Explore the countryside and mingle with the locals, as they are friendly and truly delighted to meet and greet tourists who visit their island. The physical beauty and vibrant culture of Jamaica are still its greatest assets, and the good cheer among its people makes for a memorable vacation.

Montego Bay

Known to many as MoBay, Montego Bay is the second-largest city in Jamaica and the country’s gateway to tourism. Many cruises ships port there, but the vast majority of visitors to the island arrive in Montego Bay at the Sangster International Airport.

The waterfront is lined with white-sand beaches, hotels and resorts. Main attractions include championship golf courses, beaches, the Montego Bay Marine Park, and some classic Georgian architecture downtown. Gloucester Avenue, known locally as the Hip Strip, parallels the shore and is the commercial tourist hub.

Because it’s a much larger city than Jamaica’s other tourist areas, Montego Bay offers more in the way of sightseeing, shopping and nightlife.

Even though Kingston is the nation’s capital, Montego Bay (MoBay) is where vacationers arrive by the millions year after year – all looking for fun in the sun and to tune in to Jamaica’s reggae beat

From Montego Bay you can enjoy just about any tourist attraction on the island with relative ease.

  • Venture off to Ocho Rios for Dunn’s River Falls or Mystic Mountain
  • Head over to Negril for a day on the beach and an afternoon of cliff diving at Rick’s Cafe
  • Shoot down to the South Coast for YS Falls or Appleton Rum Factory tour
  • Stay close to MoBay and enjoy the vibrant Straw Market, the vibrant Hip Strip or any number of other fun things to do nearby

In MoBay you are close to everything including the heartbeat of a culture unlike any other

Negril is located on the island’s west coast and is known as the laid back “Capital of Cool” – The vibe of the place, founded by the hippies of the late 60s and early 70s, is nearly unchanged even though there has been some robust development over the past few decades. Still, no building is taller than the tallest palm tree, so that really helps with maintaining the gorgeous tropical atmosphere

The World Famous Seven Mile Beach is home to many all inclusive resorts as well as smaller local hotels. If beach is at the top of your priority list, then Negril needs to be at the top of your destination list because it doesn’t get much better than this!
