We throw around the term “five-star resort” like it’s a universal law.

Clients ask for it, suppliers promise it, and websites slap it on their homepages. But after walking the grounds of hundreds of resorts worldwide to see what differentiates one from another, I’m going to let you in on an industry secret: there is no single worldwide organization handing out hotel stars.
A five-star rating in Aruba is judged entirely differently than five stars in France, or Mexico, or French Polynesia.
Often, traditional star systems only measure hardware—like room square footage, the presence of an elevator, or reception hours. They tell you absolutely nothing about the warmth of the service, the quality of the food, or whether you will actually enjoy your vacation.

To give my clients the real truth, I look past the hotel’s self-appointed stars.

I cross-reference recognized professional benchmarks like AAA Diamonds, Forbes Travel Guide service standards, and the prestigious MICHELIN Keys.

But my most valuable asset isn’t a guidebook—it’s my community. I am constantly networking with hundreds of other top travel advisors to share boots-on-the-ground intelligence in real time.
While a professional inspection might tell me a resort met its benchmarks six months ago, my inner circle of trusted colleagues tells me what is happening this exact week. We share the critical, unvarnished truth that you can’t find online: whether a resort’s main buffet is suddenly overcrowded, if a property is quietly dealing with a construction zone next door, or if the service levels at a specific property have unexpectedly slipped due to personnel or management changes.

The Bottom Line-

No single rating system can tell the whole story. They aren’t competing pieces of information; they are different pieces of the same puzzle.

When I help you plan a trip, my job isn’t to find you a resort with a specific plaque on the wall. My job is to lean on my global network and personal expertise to answer the only question that actually matters: “Is this the right resort for you?”
